Miguel Torres Umba is a Colombian actor whose work integrates emotional depth with exceptional physical craft. He stars in Paramount’s new horror feature Primate, delivering a fully practical, emotionally driven performance that has become one of the most celebrated creature portrayals in recent years.

Trained in acting in Bogotá before specialising in corporeal mime and physical theatre in London, Miguel has built an international career on stage and screen. He is known for his long standing collaboration with Gecko Theatre, performing in KIN (a co-production with the National Theatre), The Wedding (UK Tour), and the feature film Institute (Gecko/BBC Four).

His solo show Stardust, a visceral and deeply human exploration of the impact of the war on drugs on Latin American communities, earned acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with The Guardian calling the storytelling “beyond impressive.”

Miguel’s acting is shaped by his background in movement, transformation, and emotionally driven physicality.

PRIMATE

.

A poster for the movie Primate featuring a sad chimpanzee sitting alone in a corner with a stuffed animal on the floor, wearing a red shirt, against a yellowish-orange wall with text that reads 'Something's Wrong With Ben'.

As Ben, a domesticated chimp whose descent into feverish rage drives the entire film, Miguel delivers a performance built entirely through physical craft and emotional detail. Working inside an intricate animatronic suit, he balances tenderness, instinct, fear, and explosive violence — creating a full emotional arc without a single spoken word.

Critics have described the portrayal as “remarkable,” “transformative,” and “intensely expressive,” highlighting the flashes of empathy that make Ben’s violent spiral all the more unsettling. The performance earned Best Monster at the Toronto After Dark Awards — a direct recognition of Miguel’s work.

SLANT MAGAZINE
